How to Train Ferrets?
Ferret owners need to know how to train
ferrets properly. Training ferrets can be difficult or easy
just like training dogs or other pets. Below are some ways to
help you learn how to train ferrets.
Ferret litter pan training
To litter pan train ferrets, start your
ferret out in a small area. Keep a little dirty litter in his
pan at first to mark it as a bathroom and to keep your ferret
from digging in it. Ferrets back into corners to leave their
wastes and most of the ferrets won't mess up their beds or
food. Therefore, put ferret scented towels or food bowls in all
the non litter corners at first.
Ferrets usually use their litter pans within
a few minutes of waking up, so make sure your ferret goes
before you let him out. When your ferret is out running around
for playtime, keep a close eye on him. Put the ferret in
his litter pan every half hour or so or whenever you see him
start to back into a corner.
How do I know when ferrets need to go?
Ferrets usually will back into a corner away
from food and other areas when he wants to go.
Where to put ferret litter box or pan?
Ferrets will not travel the distance to a
litter pan like a cat, so several are generally recommended in
the area of play. Whenever your ferret used the litter pan,
give him a lot of praise and a little treat right away. Within
a few days your ferret will probably be faking using the litter
pan, just to get out of the cage and get a treat.
What if the ferret fakes using the litter
pan to get a treat?
Once your ferret has learned that using the
litter pan give him the treat, he probably will fake it to get
some attention. it's ok, at least you know that the ferret is
getting the idea and is well on his way to become fully
trained.
Should I punish the ferret when he does not
use the litter pan?
Ferrets, like other animals and pets, do not
respond well to punishment. Treats and praise will work much
better than any punishment. Consistency and immediacy are very
important.
Ferret nipping
Ferrets play roughly with each other and
like puppies and kittens, ferret kits won't know how hard they
can play without hurting you. Treats and praise will work
better than punishment to train the ferrets how rough they can
play and what not to do.
How to punish ferrets?
Avoid punishing ferrets if possible.
However, if you need to punish a ferret, then confining him to
a cage and ignoring him for a few minutes usually gets his
attention. Scruffing and a firm no may also work.
